Shirley A. Crews, a devoted Christian, loving mother, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, in Sebring, Florida. Born on May 6, 1931, in Ormond Beach, Florida, Shirley lived a life marked by devotion to her family, faith, and service to her country.
Shirley's early years were shaped by the values instilled by her parents, Harold Abel Whitney and Nellie Bly Rudd Whitney. She was also a sister to John Whitney, James Whitney, and Virginia Browning, all of whom have preceded her in death. Her commitment to her faith and family remained steadfast throughout her life.
She proudly served in the United States Navy for two years, demonstrating her dedication and patriotism during a vital time in history. Shirley's husband, Gordon W. Crews, to whom she was married for 65 years, served in the United States Air Force. Together, they experienced the unique life of military service, living in Germany, France, and across the United States, including Texas, California, North Carolina, and Florida. Gordon’s passing preceded Shirley’s, marking the end of a remarkable partnership filled with love and resilience.
As a seamstress, Shirley expressed her creativity and attention to detail through her work, offering comfort and style with her handmade creations. Her love of music and animals enriched her daily life and the lives of those around her. One of her most heartfelt roles was as a caregiver for her mother-in-law, reflecting her nurturing spirit and selflessness.
Shirley’s family was the core of her existence. She is survived by her daughters Deborah A. Crews, Cathy Johnson, and Barbara Michaels, who carry forward her legacy of love and strength. She was a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren and a doting great-grandmother to eleven great-grandchildren. Her extended family includes nine nieces and nephews who were also touched by her kindness and warmth.
