Obituary

Bonita (Bonnie) Louise Roberts was born to Clarence and Leola King on May 1, 1943, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The second of nine children, Bonnie treasured her large family and the time they spent together. No matter where in the country a family gathering was held, she never wanted to miss an opportunity to be there. Distance was never much of an obstacle when family was involved. She especially loved a good game of Scrabble and never turned down an invitation to play. Fittingly, her final game was with her great-grandson, Ezekiel, passing along a cherished family tradition to the fourth generation.

Bonnie married the love of her life, Donald (Don) Lee Roberts, on August 21, 1965, at the Inter City Bible Church in Lansing, Michigan. Although they first met in ninth grade while attending DeWitt High School, their romance blossomed later. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and service, recently celebrating 61 years of marriage.

Bonnie graduated from Bob Jones University and later Central Michigan University, earning degrees in elementary education. Throughout her career, she taught in Christian schools in Michigan, Virginia, and Florida, primarily working with students in third through fifth grades. She also earned a certification to teach children with special needs. Her passion for education extended far beyond the classroom.

Bonnie’s influence as an educator reached across generations. Wherever she went, she seemed to encounter former students or families whose lives she had touched. Perhaps one of the greatest testaments to her impact was that her own daughter, Rebekah, followed in her footsteps and became a special needs teacher herself, inspired by her mother’s example.

Beyond her work as an educator, Bonnie faithfully served alongside her husband as a pastor’s wife. She organized and led countless Vacation Bible Schools, taught Sunday School, hosted ladies’ luncheons, and poured her heart into the lives of those around her. Her faith was not simply something she professed; it was something she lived each day through her love, kindness, and service to others.

Her love for others was rooted in her unwavering love for Jesus. She shared her faith not only through the lessons she taught and the ministries she served, but also through the way she lived. She believed in the value of every person, especially children who needed someone to believe in them. She gave generously of her time, her talents, and her heart, leaving an imprint on countless lives, many of which she may never have fully realized.

Bonnie is survived by her loving husband, Donald Roberts; her children, Alethea Parker (David Campbell), Wayne Roberts (Nike Whittemore), and Rebekah Esch (Thomas); her grandchildren, Jonathan Roberts (Natalie), Jeffrey Sterlachini (Jay), Alexandra Roberts, Stacie Marie Parker, Nicholas Parker, and Abigail Esch; and her great-grandchildren, Ezekiel, Declan, and Remington Roberts, along with Kane and Zeus Sterlachini.

She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Weatherbee (Greg); her brothers, Robert King (Helen), Ronald King (Diana), Lewis King, Charles King (Karen), and William King (Cindy); along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her sister, Frances Dew, her brother, Clarence (Carly) King, and her son-in-law, Stacy Parker.

Her earthly classroom may be closed, but the lessons she taught through her words, her example, and her love will continue for generations.
